Evi O is a visual creator with an unwavering curiosity for the abstract form. With colour as her cornerstone, her work encapsulates the energy and experiences shared with those around her. Her recently commissioned work for Framer titled Venus Serenade is a continuation of this, inspired by the romance of summer.
A multihyphenate, the Sydney based artist’s endeavours span painting, publishing, branding design and more recently writing. With all her practices under the one roof at Evi-O.Studio Marrickville, it’s little wonder why each bleeds into the other. Evi views each medium as a vacant playground for thoughts to materialise and interact. “You are challenged differently whether you’re painting a big panel or designing an animation - different mediums help me expand my creative universe.”

There is an unmistakable aura of joy and playfulness in Evi’s work, a feeling usually fuelled by her connection and interaction with the natural world. Her most recent series, Holiday, is an ode to Australian fauna. Organic forms and electric tones create an abstracted recollection of her bushwalking experiences through Victoria.

Evi’s creative journey began with eight years in the publishing world as a designer for Penguin Books, cementing her interest in the visual and sparking her experimentations with acrylics. “As an artist, I’m self-taught. When I first explored art, the execution was much more laboured, the ideas less so, and over time they swapped, the ideas became more layered and the execution succinct”.

From themes to thumbnails, Evi’s process is methodical. Sketches become forms, swatches become colour pallets, and production commences. It is here that Evi feels most at ease. Organic lines constrain vivid colours, pitted against each other in vibrating combinations. The subconscious inclusion of her signature small circle providing balance in her compositions.

The genre of abstraction calls for interaction and interpretation from its audience. In Evi’s case, the joy she feels whilst creating is contagious in her work. “I am in my optimum positive state when I’m painting and I really do hope my audience takes a little bit of that after being immersed in my work, walking away feeling uplifted”.
